Marisa Thomas graduated from Weedsport in 2014 and is now doing amazing things.

Marisa was fun and always fun to be around in her high school days, and now she is bringing that cheerful attitude to the National Coast Guard.

In the 2013-14 school year, Marisa decided she was going to join the Coast Guard.

After she graduated that summer she left for Cape May, New Jersey, and started boot camp.

After boot camp was over they assigned her to start her training in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where she is now.

I asked Marisa how she likes it and she said, “I like it so far. I’ve only been here for the winter so we have only done a lot of training. Not much happens in the winter. So I’m excited for the spring and summer to actually go on more search and rescue cases.”

Thomas hasn’t been assigned a specific job yet, she is what called a “nonrate.” This for the people right out of boot camp and they must wait six months then they can put their name on school list.

Marisa has recently put her name on the health service technicians list, so now she has to wait. What she does right now is search and rescue and law enforcement.

Thomas also talked about some things she has used from high school in the coast guard and she said, “Being part of the field hockey team with TL as a coach.” Marisa played field hockey throughout all of high school. Thomas said, “She always pushed us to our limits and it helped me learn to never give up. And also being a part of the team taught me the importance of teamwork and communication which is huge in what I do now. You can never be loud enough. Not on the field. And not out on the boats.”

Marisa is still close with all her friends from Weedsport, and her younger sister Julia Thomas is a freshman at Weedsport.

Thomas is doing a wonderful thing for our country. Thank you Marisa!
