Mrs. Burnham Retires After Nearly Three Decades of Helping Students

Deborah Brown, Staff Writer

Mrs. Burnham has been a teacher’s aid at the Elementary School for the past 28 years. This year is Mrs. Burnham’s last year of being a teacher’s aid. She plans on retiring after this school year.

Recently, I asked Mrs. Burnham why she thought that this school year was the year to retire. She told me that, “It felt like it was the right time, there is a lot of new stuff coming in. Time for a change.”

Mrs. Burnham’s plans for retirement include trying to get more things done around the house. She also plans on babysitting her grandson to help out her son.

I asked Mrs. Burnham what were some of her favorite moments being a teacher’s aid. She told me she loved getting to know the kids, and being able to go to different classes. She’s not in the same classroom all day.

I also asked her what were some moments with students that you enjoyed the most. She replied, “Seeing the kindergartners learning new things, and when the older kids say ‘I get it now,’ makes me happy.”

My final question for Mrs. Burnham is what is your overall thought of the Weedsport Central School District and just the school itself from over the years of working as a teacher’s aid. She said, “Everyone in the community is very nice. I will remember all the friendships I’ve made here.”

Writer’s Note: I had Mrs. Burnham help me in certain classes when I was in the Elementary School and my thought on her was that she was very helpful; she helped you with something until you understood it. She was also very nice to the students she helped out. I really enjoyed having her as a teacher’s aid to help me when I needed.
