The new school record holding 4X400 relay team.

A very rare occurrence happened at the Weedsport Track and Field Invitational last Friday as two school records were broken on the same day. The 4×400 record was broken for the first time this year,  and the pole vault record set earlier this season by Steve Gilfus was set even higher. The 4×400 team, consisting of: Caleb Canino, Riley Spingler, Matt Groce, and Gilfus,  set their personal best with a time of 3:32.12, and is now the fastest 4×400 team in the state. Gilfus vaulted 13 feet 6 inches to break his own record.

Let’s start with the 4×4 team and see what Caleb, Riley, Matt, and Steve have to say about their performance at the Weedsport Invitational last Friday:

Q: Why did this particular race go so well?

Caleb: We were already one of the best when we got there, and with the other schools there, Coach Jordan was really pushing us and just kept yelling at us to get it.

Q: What has made you guys so successful as a team this year?

Matt: Each and every day we try hard and we try our best, and we just keep getting better and better. We go for records, I’m not going to lie, we want to win. We’ve just got that mindset.

Q: What are your goals for the rest of the season?

Riley: Win sectionals again, then we will head to state quals, win state quals, and hopefully we can head to states and make our run from there.

Q: Can you fill us in on the day for you with both the relay and the pole vault records being broken?

Steve: Well, I got up there, jumped eleven feet on my first jump, won the meet and I was just like, ‘hey, let’s just throw it up (raise the height).’ I threw it up to 13 feet, 3 inches, which qualifies me for state quals, and then I threw it up again to 13-6. After that, it was just like, ‘today’s a good day.’ Then I went and ran the 4×4 and helped break the record.
