Marshawn Lynch: Beast, or Burden?

Marshawn Lynch: Beast, or Burden?

Jon Wejko, Staff Writer

Marshawn Lynch has been in the news very often in the past. Not only for his career in football, but for his notoriously horrible attitude at interviews, and his DUI – which ended with a charge of reckless driving. But all of these facts aren’t as important as how over-hyped he is. He is undoubtedly a decent running back in the NFL, but he isn’t as good as some others like the Viking’s RB Adrian Peterson or  the Packer’s RB Eddie Lacy.

He is a very important cog in the Seahawks running machine but is he important enough to compromise their game?

Here are the rushing statistics from the Seahawks:

PLAYER ATT YDS YDS/ATT LONG TD
Thomas Rawls 147 830 5.6 69 4
Russell Wilson 103 553 5.4 24 1
Marshawn Lynch 111 417 3.8 24 3
Christine Michael 39 192 4.9 45 0
Fred Jackson 26 100 3.8 16 0
Bryce Brown 41 49 2.3 18 1
DuJuan Harris 28 32 4 6 0
Derrick Coleman 5 20 4 19 0
Tyler Lockett 5 20 4 8 0
Rod Smith 2 5 2.5 3 0
Kasen Williams 1 5 5 5 0
Will Tukuafu 4 1 .3 0 1
Tarvaris Jackson 8 -8 -1 -10 0

Something I learned from reading is that Lynch isn’t even the best running back on their team. He’s the most popular, because I doubt anyone’s rushing to the store to pay 80 dollars on a Thomas Rawls jersey. But with his average rushing records (shown above) and his awful attitude, some wonder why the Seahawks keep him around.

Marshawn had a biopic that was going to be released but after four minutes of sloppy filming and swearing, the movie was cut and “Family First,” the title of the movie, won’t be released for everyone’s viewing pleasure. He’s been out since Week 11 with sports related hernia recuperating from surgery. But since he’s been gone for a whopping 7 weeks – 6 were spent not working with the team.

Finally, his relationship with the Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson should be addressed. Many a game has ended with the two unhappy in the locker room. With Lynch gone, Wilson was been playing a little better.
