She’s a He: An Original Poem

She's a He: An Original Poem

Ann Benson, Staff Writer/Broadcaster

I was born in the wrong place.

At the wrong time.

In the wrong way.

They say be yourself.

They say that they’re are people who’ll help.

But I am not accepted.

“I don’t care what the gender of the baby is.”

“I want them to be healthy.”

So why be disappointed when I come through and tell you who I am?

You said you’d love me no matter what,

Why did that change?

I am the mouse trapped by a cat.

I am stuck in the room with no way out.

I have footprints of a mouse but the paws of a cat.

I am stuck at the dead end of a labyrinth.

Do I turn around?

Do I stay?

Do I have the courage?

They say reach for your dreams,

But that’s not the same for me.

I’ve been pushed around,

Told that I have nonsense dreams.

Go be a doctor,

Be a vet,

Be a teacher,

Just be yourself.

But what if I want to be

The patient,

The pet,

The student,

What if that is who I am?

Would you accept me then?

Would I be happy?

If I followed in someone else’s footsteps?

If I didn’t dare to be different?

Would it make you happy?

Happy,

She is straight.

She is a woman.

She wants to be a Doctor.

Inside she knows different.

That she, is actually a he.

He, is gay.

He wants to become a choreographer.

But he, isn’t a him.

He’s a she because everyone told him he had to.

He’s a she because he has a low self esteem

He’s a she, but that’s not what He’s supposed to be.

He is supposed to be himself.

Not like everyone else.

We are not clones.

No one is the same.

Everyone is different.

Be who you want to be and don’t be afraid to to show the world who you are. Perform for your audience, because the curtain is coming up.
