For WHS Junior AJ Spoor, Working on His Truck is a Family Affair
December 7, 2016
AJ Spoor, a junior at Weedsport High, has an interest in working with his truck. “I have been interested in it for most of my life,” he said.
The old truck used to belong to his grandpa, but was then passed down to his dad. His dad decided to give it to him because he went to buy a new truck. The old truck is a 1995 Chevy Silverado, which was pretty good back during the days. The old truck started to break down and was left in their garage.
Here is a look at the truck when it was in the rebuilding stages:
“After I saw my dad purchased a brand new truck, I started to work on my own truck,” AJ Spoor said. “I have been working on it for almost 2 years.”
His passion for vehicles was influenced by his surroundings. “My dad is interested in cars too, and I watch tv shows about cars,” AJ said. He also had past experience with cars when he was in elementary school. “I learned it from my dad and some of my friends that are mechanics,” he said.
His dad, having past experience with cars, was able to teach AJ different parts of the truck, and what each part is for. “I worked with my dad on several vehicles and work at a diesel shop,” Brad Spoor (AJ’s dad) said.
When his dad was able to teach him everything he knows, he was able to fix the truck without trouble. He encounters a few problems here and there. “Some parts of the truck were hard to find, and I had to have people make it for me,” AJ said. Considering it was an old truck, some parts weren’t being made anymore and had to be custom made for them. During his 2 years working on his truck, he explained what his hardest experience he had to face. “Probably like taking off rusted parts and bolts,” AJ said.
Throughout his two years working on his truck, it is in better shape than it was before, with his dad at his side. “It was a lot of work, and frustrating at times,” Brad Spoor said. “It was a good learning experience for both of us.”
