An Open Letter from the Editors
October 2, 2017
Dear Readers,
After the events that transpired today in Las Vegas, leaving 50 dead and anywhere from 200-400 injured, we’d like to express our significant concern and astonishment at the heart-wrenching horrors that transpired over the past day, and has been announced as one of the deadliest shootings in American History.
We’re not using this as an opportunity to post sensational or scandalous content to draw the attention of viewership to the website, as we know that many other outlets will do such. As a small community of people here in Weedsport we understand people’s general lack of trust and disdain for the media. We might be a lowly student newspaper, but we’d like to hold and adhere ourselves to Journalistic standards.
To the families of the victims involved in this, all of us at the Johnny Green would like to announce that our thoughts and prayers are with them. All of our coverage will be well researched and factual based to bring the people that read our sight the information they need to make educated decisions in their life. The people of this country must come together and stop things from this from ever occurring again as it only furthers the divides between families, homes, and friendships over frivolous politics when there are lives at stake.
The entirety of the staff at the Johnny Green would like to propose to the students and community here at Weedsport to collect donations and send them to the Nevada Chapter to the Red Cross. We’ll need help from the students and faculty to rally behind us with this idea. The Red Cross and local hospitals are in need of blood and monetary donations to help rectify this tragedy. Putting up a simple article like this or a Facebook caption to express your outrage is well-intentioned but won’t help the people truly at need. Now is the time for us to act.
Sincerely,
The Editors
