New Technology Staff at Weedsport

Deb Brown, Staff Writer

This school year Weedsport Jr./Sr. High School has had to hire a lot of new staff, including two new technology teachers, Mr. Gates and Ms. Flynn.

Ms. Flynn is the first female teacher to teach technology at Weedsport. Ms. Flynn told me that she grew up on Long Island. She mentioned that she enjoyed technology courses in high school, where her graduating class was 250 strong.

For her, college involved lots of hands on projects and was a fun learning experience. She learned team building skills in her small classes.

Being a female in a predominantly male class, she sometimes has to make herself look taller because of her short stature. She believes Weedsport is a wonderful place.

Mr. Gates is the other technology teacher here at our school. Before coming to Weedsport, he taught in the Clyde Savannah Central School district. Mr. Gates said that Clyde Savannah is very similar to Weedsport in that it was a very small school and everyone knew each other. He also said that Clyde Savannah students take a lot of pride in their athletic programs, like we do here.

Mr. Gates plans for this year are to work hard, educate the students about technology, and have fun. Mr. Gates plans to improve the technology program here at Weedsport by implementing new ideas into the program as well as encouraging more students to enroll in high school technology courses.

Mr. Gates teaches the following classes:

Home and Car Care is designed to provide students with the knowledge to fix and maintain their homes and vehicles.

Design Drawing for Production which is designed to provide students with drawing skills for board drawing as well as computer drawings. Students will draw products and produce them from their drawings.

Small Engines is designed to provide students with the basic principles of the small gas engine. Students learn about 4 cycle and 2 cycle engines and their operating principles.

7th and 8th grade technology  courses are designed to provide students with knowledge of technology and its usage. Students gain technical skills through hands on projects.

7th grade Home & Careers students learn about being a consumer and has being an informed consumer impacts their financial situations. Students will learn the difference between a job and a career. Students will also learn how to be successful at home and their careers when entering the real world.

The Johnny Green welcomes Mr. Gates and Ms. Flynn to Weedsport!
