Andrew O’Bryan to Compete in the Paralympics

Andrew O’Bryan, one of Weedsport’s best swimmers, is now going to be competing in the Paralympics this year.

Andrew qualified for the Paralympics when he went to the New York State qualifiers in the 250 meter relay. Andrew didn’t realize how well he did until Liverpool’s swim coach came up and said how he was amazed at his time..

Liverpool’s coach gave him the information about the Paralympics and how to get involved. Ed Beck, WHS Varsity Swimming coach, contacted the woman who is on the Paralympic committee and she told him that Andrew had already qualified.

Andrew will race against the S9 group, which is anything that is an above the knee amputation. As many of you know, Andrew suffered from bone cancer when he was in sixth grade which resulted in his leg being amputated.

O’Bryan will be the only high schooler at the event because there are no other high schoolers that are in the same category as him that are as fast.

O’Bryan will start training in April and will race in some competitions during the summer and try to get qualified for Internationals in Berlin, Germany.

We are very proud of Andrew and all his accomplishments and wish him the best of luck.
