Fun in the Fall

Jalen Flaherty, Staff Writer

What’s your favorite season? No, seriously? No, no not summer. Okay, yeah winter is cool (literally). But we all know it’s really fall, right? There’s nothing like a nice day of pumpkin picking and then a night of complete terror when you attend your favorite local haunted house to get that Halloween spirit going! But really, where can you go in the little town of Weedsport to have such fun? Absolutely nowhere. Luckily there are many attractions in the surrounding area that you will enjoy.

Pumpkin and Apple Picking

What with Halloween coming up we all know everyone will need to get several pumpkins to carve. Tim’s Pumpkin Patch would be the perfect place to go. Located at 2901 Rose Hill Rd in Marietta, and they are open everyday from 9am to 6pm. Not only are there great pumpkin picking opportunities, but there are also baked goods and a corn maze. And what about picking apples? The perfect place to go is Beak & Skiff in Lafayette, open everyday from 10am to 6pm.

Hiking

When the leaves are changing hiking can be a fun activity. Whether you’re enjoying nature or taking fun fall pictures, it’s always a win. Try Fillmore Glen State Park which is located in Moravia, or Watkins Glen. Both places trails will be open everyday from 8am to 6pm until 10/31.

Haunted Houses and Hayrides

Of course now that October has begun, new haunted houses are beginning to reopen. One of my personal favorite haunted houses is in Auburn, located at the Owasco Firehouse Pavilion. With several different monsters scaring you at every turn, you’re sure to have a thrilling time at Fright Night Mansion. They will be open every Friday and Saturday night beginning on the 16th from 6pm to 10pm and a special encore show on Halloween from 1pm to 4pm. Donations of $5 and/or canned goods would be appreciated. This small donation will benefit the Calvary Food Pantry. “ It’s scary… too scary! “ reads the posters promoting the event. Weedsport sophomore, Sammi Ball, who works in the Mansion says “I’m having a blast working with all these people and it’s so great coming back every year. I really hope that more Weedsport kids come and see the Mansion and all the work that was put into it. “

Hopefully this gave you some inspiration for the upcoming holiday other than the plethora of pumpkin spice flavored treats and got you out of the mindset that the only productive thing that will come out of this season is watching reruns of Hocus Pocus on ABC and eating your younger sibling’s trick-or-treat candy. The Johnny Green hopes you have a scary and safe Halloween!
