Dr. Kevin Antshel discusses anxiety with the Weedsport community

On May 4th, Dr. Kevin Antshel, a Psychologist from Syracuse University, showed up in the High School Cafeteria to give a “Parent-Teacher Anxiety Meeting.” In his talk, he discussed what anxiety disorders actually are, what they mean, and even how to treat them.

Dr. Antshel was asked how he could possibly define anxiety, “Anxiety is a negative mood characterized by physical tension and apprehension of the unknown or future.” He continued on, “There is both good and bad anxieties. Good ones are temporary that push you towards your goals but bad ones are one that last or stick around… they’re the ones that inhibit your life and turn everything on its head. It can be bidirectional.

As the night continued on, the focus shifted from less of attempting to understand the science behind it, and more of recognizing it and learning how to treat the disorder. “The goal isn’t elimination, but management. I wouldn’t wanna live in a world that had absolutely no anxiety, I’d like to live in one without unreasonable anxiety. Praise positive behavior, and reward each step at a time, and shift focus from the outcomes. Have optimism, share and relate.

One of the parents asked how you would go about getting the help you need. “There is hope, if you have, or anyone you know in your school has troubles with anxiety, don’t be afraid to talk to someone and reach out to a guidance counselor for help.”
