Winter sports wrapped up recently and The Johnny Green sat down with some players to see how their season went.

Overall thoughts on the season for the team and you personally?
Overall as a team we had many ups and downs but as the season went on we learned from our downs which led to the ups. We also had a very fun season and I always loved being around the guys.
Highlights/Key moments of the season?
Beating Tully at home and beating Port Byron at home.
What do you expect for the team next year? Anything to improve?
I have high expectations for the upcoming team. Many of the guys on the team love to put in work and want to get better. Which is the right mindset to have and will lead them in the right direction.
Swimming and Diving: The swimming record was 2-5.

Overall thoughts on the season for the team and you personally?
It was a pretty good season. The bond the team had was really strong. We may not have won a lot of meets, however we grew as a team. Personally, this has been my best season and a great way to end my high school swimming career.
Highlights/Key moments of the season?
A highlight for the team would be how we consistently improved as a whole. We have consistently dropped time and made major improvements. Personally, breaking two pool records and a school record was a huge highlight for me. It feels good to leave Weedsport with my name on the record board.
What do you expect for the team next year? Anything to improve?
The team is looking good for next year. We were pretty senior heavy this year, so losing us five will definitely impact the team, but if they keep training consistently in and out of the pool, there will be major potential.
Girls Volleyball: Their overall record was 12-8.

Overall thoughts on the season for the team and you personally?
The team had a great season! We ended the season with a 12-8 record and a 5-3 league record. The team worked very hard and overcame many obstacles. We had a very senior heavy this year but the underclassmen also did a great job at stepping and taking on some very important roles. We had some sickness in the middle of our season due to Covid but the team pulled through, working around new positions, and trying new things. At the end of our season we sadly lost in our first round of sectionals against Westmoreland.
Highlights/key moments of the season?
This season we beat some challenging teams that the Weedsport team has not beat in many years. My personal favorite game was the MPH away game and the Fabius-Pompey away game. Every time we play MPH it’s a battle. They have very tall girls and are great at playing defense. I remember this game because the net was super short. We worked very hard this game and overall it was a great game for our team. We played Fabius-Pompey on a Saturday morning. Our setter Megan was away that game so we had Emma setting. Although we ended up losing this game I would say that this was the best team game we played this season. Everyone was super positive and I feel like we all had fun but we also were putting in the work and playing hard.
What do you expect for the team next year? Anything to improve?
I sadly will not be on the team next year but I have super high hopes from them!! I feel that there is good varsity experience from the girls that were on variety last year. I also think the girls moving up are very strong players. I think the team just needs to get used to playing with each other and they will have a rockstar team!! There are multiple great leaders that will be on the team next year and amazing and kind players playing together.
Bowling: Their overall record was 5-3.

Overall thoughts on the season for the team and you personally?
I think that the season overall was really good for the team and myself. We got a lot of players and lots of players improved including myself.
Highlights/key moments of the season?
The highlights of the year have got to be when we found out we were Co-Champions. Also when we did our best sectional finish yet. Me and Daniel Burtless went to state qualifying; both of us got in top 10.
What do you expect for the team next year? Anything to improve?
The team next year will have to start caring more instead of just treating it like a fun time to mess around with friends.
Girls Basketball: The girls’ record ended at 19-4.

Overall thoughts on the season for the team and you personally?
Overall we had an amazing season. We were such a close team and had a very special bond. Personally I felt that I have improved so much and had one of my best seasons. Our team was always hyping eachother up and never let each other get down. I think us hyping each other was one of the reasons why we did so well. If we had an off game we would still support each other and come back even better and stronger for the next game. We practiced so hard everyday and we never gave up throughout the season.
Highlights/key moments of the season?
Some highlights of the season were coming back while playing Lyons, there was a lot of hype on the game after our loss against them last year. Another highlight I would say was playing Tully because they were state ranked and when we played them the energy never died and it was one of my best games of the season. Locker rooms after a win is an experience I will never forget, we always bang on the lockers and get so excited for each other.
What do you expect for the team next year? Anything to improve?
There is so much going for this team. So many players have the potential that they haven’t even reached yet. One thing the team would improve on would have to be their strength. Kayla Flask has over 300 points just this season and will definitely continue to improve. Mallory Brown is good at driving in and shooting threes. So many more players are continuing to work hard and I have never seen anyone on the team give up when they are frustrated they compose themselves and keep going.
