Have you ever wondered where the creation of your favorite candy was born? Most candies that are eaten in the United States, are made somewhere else in the world.
One of the most popular candies is gummy bears. These delicious treats are actually made in Germany. Hans Riegel Sr. created the Gummy Bear, or as they say in Germany, “Gummibär,” in the early 1900’s.
One of the more popular brands of gummy bears is Haribo. This was the original gummy bear company in the early 1900’s. Now days you see the Haribo commercials on television showing a Haribo factory run by kids. Some may even recall their logo, “The fruitiest and the chewiest!”
The whole idea of gummy bears came from “trained bears” or also known as “dancing bears.” This is where someone would put on a live performance of them taming a bear!
It turns out even some more unique, but equally good, candies like Rock Candy, are foreign. Rock candy was first made in Iran during the ninth century by creating sugar crystals that took six to seven days to form.
Not only can you just eat plain rock candy, but another common use of it is dissolving it in tea instead of using sugar packages or cubes. Rock candy is fairly popular in the United States and very popular in India where they use rock candy as a mouth freshener.
Even Canada is responsible for creating a delicious candy, Cadbury Caramilk! Cadbury Caramilk is made in various forms like chocolate caramel filled Easter eggs or even a simple caramel chocolate bar!
Cadbury chocolate was first introduced as a chocolate caramel filled bar in 1968 and is known as Caramello Bars. Cadbury is produced in the Gladstone Chocolate Factory in Toronto, Canada.
Gum is very popular in the United States and in Brazil. Brazil was the creator of a very well known brand of gum, Trident! The word “Trident” comes from the three enzymes to promote dental health. It also contains a sugar that is okay for your teeth to chew (sugar alcohol xylitol.) Trident was made in 1964 and was the first national brand of gum in the United States.
Mr.Sgarlata said his favorite candy is Skittles because of the variety of colors and flavors! Makala Adams on the other hand chose something a little less fruity, Twix bars! Mr. Nicklaw also chose a candy on the chocolate side, 100 Grand Bars. They stand out to him because they are “Caramelly delicious!” as he put it. Back to the fruity candy Grace Beardsley told The Johnny Green that her favorite candy is Starburst because of their fruity flavor!
Now that you know candy in the United States isn’t always from here, where do you think the idea of your favorite candy came come?
