Donald Sterling: Banned for Life
Donald Sterling was banned for life from the NBA a couple weeks ago, and fined $2.5 million for saying racial remarks. NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, the one who placed the ban, and gave the fine.
Sterling the was the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, with superstar basketball player, Blake Griffen.
Silver was quoted saying, “I fully expect to get the support I need from the other NBA owners to remove him. We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling’s views. They simply have no place in the NBA.”
The lifetime ban from the NBA bans Sterling from attending anything NBA related, from NBA Games, to practices, to facilities, to even support parties. He is not allowed to partake in any event.
Sterling is also being forced by the NBA to sell the Los Angeles Clippers. Who is looking to buy the team, you ask? Oprah Winfrey.
Sterling also has one more major reason to sell the team. He was just recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. He will be fighting two battles, the NBA Ban, and cancer. However, he will most likely lose one of them — the NBA Ban.
To appeal the ban, he would need the support of a majority of the other owners, which he doesn’t have.
Sterling himself acknowledged that he was the recorded man on the tape, who made the racial comments. He made insulting comments towards Chris Paul, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and even Beyonce!
Sterling’s remarks were both disturbing and untolerable. There is no place in today’s society for comments such as that. Although he can not be punished by law because he has freedom of speech, Silver did the right thing to show Sterling’s ideals are not the ideals of the NBA.
