Spread the Love

Valentine’s Day, originally known as St. Valentine’s Day, or the ” Day of Love” originated during the Ancient Roman Fertility festival called “Lupercalia.” This was a festival that was celebrated in mid-February.  It was officially declared St. Valentine’s Day on February 14th, around 498 A.D. by Pope Gelasius. It has been celebrated ever since.

Some people are really bitter around Valentine’s Day if they are single, or do not have anyone to be their valentine. Well, not me. Even though I do not have anyone to celebrate with, I still love love! There is so much hate in this world, even though there hasn’t always been. I think it is nice to have a reminder to spread the love!

Now this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to show this all the time, it is just sweet to have a day designated to love in general. Senior Alexis Short agrees,  she said “You shouldn’t always rely on the day that is set aside for your special someone, because every day you should do something little to show how much they mean to you. “

There are a number of great things about Valentine’s Day! The aisles at the stores become full of heart shaped candies, and well, who doesn’t love candy? Teddy Bears, cards, and a number of cute movies too! Now I know not everyone enjoys a sappy love story, but you have to love the Romantic Comedies! They aren’t too bad! Alexis also added “Although I’m not always into them, the cute movies tend to get to me.”

You don’t have to have a date to enjoy yourself on February 14th. There is a number of things you can do by yourself. Just go to the store, rent a movie, grab some popcorn, and candy for a night in. If you really don’t want to sit by yourself, throw a party for all of your single friends. After all, this is a day about spreading love, so spread it! It is important to especially embrace, and take care of those who might not be having the best Valentine’s day!

Now for anyone who does not like Valentine’s Day, I bet you love the day after! I mean come on, who doesn’t like 75% off candy and Teddy Bears? There is always a plus side to any situation!

Valentine’s Day is also not just a day for your significant other. It is the day of love. Which means if you love any one at all, tell them! Whether it is family, friends, or a significant other.

I don’t think many people realize that life has a weird way of handling things. You never know what is going to happen, so don’t waste time. Always overuse the words “I Love You,” because you never know when your last one will be.
